It is a barrel-fermented white wine made by Bodegas Contador (Benjamín Romeo), with native grapes of the Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía and Viura varieties.

It has an intense yellow colour. On the nose it is a fine and elegant wine, with citrus aromas, hints of wild flowers and aromatic herbs, as well as of stone fruits (apricot, plum), and a mineral touch. The contribution of the oak is very balanced. On the palate, it is fresh, fine and very acidic, with a long aftertaste.

It combines very well with roast turbot, smoked eel and white or blue cheese.

Recommended serving temperature is between 10º and 12ºC.

Vineyard and elaboration

The harvested grapes come from 16 hectares of selected vineyards located in the Rioja towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Leza and Briones.

Grape harvesting is manual, adjusting each plot's harvest date to the optimum ripening of its grape variety.

Once in the winery, grapes are cold macerated for 24 hours before being gently pressed. The juice obtained is transferred to new French oak barrels where it ferments for 15 days at a controlled temperature (17ºC).

The wine rests on its lees for 10 months of ageing, undergoing regular stirring and pumping over processes until bottling (without clarifying or filtering).

Bodegas Contador

Bodega Contador's history begins in 1995, when Benjamín Romeo, winemaker and vine-grower,  purchases a  centenarian cave under the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja). In 1996 he achieves the first vintage of his ‘La Cueva del Contador’ wine and starts buying vineyards for his wine-making project.

This project has been growing little by little util it reached its breaking point with 2004 and 2005 vineyards, when he got the highest score in the 100-point Parker wine-scoring scale (100 points). This unprecedented recognition skyrocketed the brand's international prestige, and it has not stopped growing since then.
