Pestiños with Sugar


Pestiños with Sugar are a cultural and historical legacy from Extremadura that has been passed down from generation to generation and is now part of traditional confectionery. They are especially popular at Easter and Christmas time, although they can be eaten all year around, as they are a delight for children and adults alike.

Pestiños with Sugar are square-shaped with the corner tips glued together to make a kind of ‘handkerchief’. In this case they are covered with honey. It is a sweet that is very much a part of Spanish culture, in fact, it appears in several novels and plays. For example, ‘El sombrero de tres picos’ written by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, where pestiños are mentioned.

María Jesús Fajardo is the master confectioner, the third generation of her family in this profession, who carefully makes this typical Extremaduran sweet from her bakery in Jaraíz de la Vera, a village in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura. She uses the family’s traditional recipe and top-quality ingredients.

A very sweet tradition
