Interview with Mónica Plaza, La Chinata Oleoteca in Vitoria

The Oleoteca La Chinata de Vitoria is located in the downtown area of the town, calle Rioja number 7, and opened its doors seven years ago, at the end of 2011.

Mónica Plaza, of Extremaduran descent, was born in Vitoria and is the current owner of the Oleoteca La Chinata located in Vitoria. It is located in the downtown area of the town, calle Rioja number 7, a place of passage for many people and very well connected by buses and the tram where there is an abundance of local customers who regularly consume their products and where they also find in La Chinata the perfect corner to buy your gifts.

Before opening her own store, Mónica worked in commerce for several years: “During that time I learned a lot about customer service, sales and their psychology, the different types of customers and situations, in short, the commercial management of a store. A priori it seems an easy task but it is not like that, specific attitudes and aptitudes are required for it... the years and the needs have been confirming it to me”, he affirms.

She decided to open the Oleoteca because she had known the brand since she was a child: “We like it a lot, at home we have always been consumers of it and we have followed its trajectory”. Mónica assures that she opted for it without giving it much thought: “Always with the conviction that when things are done well, everything turns out, there is no other formula than work, passion and perseverance”, she points out.

When he set up the store, he continued to train on the subject; Analysis Sensory and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasting; Varieties of olives, Oliviculture and Elaiotechnics: "I wanted to offer the consumer 'something more', give added value to the bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil that is bought in my store, that was my challenge and today, after almost seven years, I think I was not very wrong, at least that is how our clients let me know, and I am infinitely grateful for it”, he points out.

In fact, at that time there was no gourmet shop in the area and he received many visits from interested people. Today, there are already some other gourmet establishments relatively close by with other types of products, of which La Chinata stands out for the information of interest on the EVOOs that it offers the customer, its great differential factor, although it considers that they complement each other.

The beginning

With all this and looking back, he admits that the beginning was not easy: “I opened the store at the end of 2011, in the middle of the economic crisis and in a place where the brand was hardly known. My great pillar and base was the illusion that I had, the humility with which I faced that beginning and the "mental preparation" that starting always costs and entails a lot of sacrifice". To this he adds: “Of course, from minute zero, I had my loyal clientele, which I carry in my heart and I am eternally grateful for the welcome. I always gave my best and it continues to be so. I have felt very loved, and that is a privilege”, she nods proudly.

In this way, after nearly seven years since its opening, she assures that the balance is "always positive": "I am very satisfied with my work and trajectory. The confidence that we have earned day by day is a compelling reason for this”.

Among the best-selling products are Extra Virgin Olive Oil in any of its versions, as well as pates, cheese creams and chocolates.

Regarding cosmetics, hand creams point out that they are always present in daily sales, as are bath products, such as gels, shampoos and body moisturizers, and soaps.

For his part, he admits that he feels a special weakness for the ultra-soft textured Facial Scrub and the Anti-Pollution Serum, "it's fantastic," he declares. And in gourmet, he loves EVOOs and chocolates.

Finally, Mónica emphasizes that the most important values she wants to project are humility and trust: "Humility creates a very healthy environment where the customer feels comfortable and invites them to enter even when there is no a priori intention to buy and the person who visits us only wants to see and find out”, he affirms. And remember that La Chinata is clear evidence that to enjoy quality gourmet food and cosmetics it is not necessary to invest a lot of money.

But for her, the most satisfactory thing is customer service: "I feel highly valued by my customers, very well treated and the relationships established are very pleasant."

And he concludes: "All of this is possible thanks to the fact that I chose and opted for a product like La Chinata in which I believe, I love it and it provides me with everything I need to be able to carry out my work in this way."
