Frontonio Microcósmico Garnacha is named after San Frontonio, patron saint of Epila, a town located in the northwest of Spain where this wine is produced.

Legend has it that San Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans. His body was buried in a cemetery and his head was thrown into the Ebro River, near Zaragoza. Miraculously, his head was found upstream, on one of the banks of the River Jalón, in Épila.

This is a limited production wine made discreetly in a humble garage by Fernando Mora and Mario López.

It has a pale maroon colour. On the nose it has aromas of raspberry and strawberry over mineral, white pepper and with a spicy background. Ageing for 10 months in concrete vats creates an elegant style with almost no wood, austere and floral (5% comes from ageing in 300-litre barrels). It is a dry wine, with refreshing acidity, fine tannins and muscular texture. A medium length of a complex and pure wine.

Recommended serving temperature: 16 ºC.

Vineyard and elaboration

The vineyards are located in Jarque at 600 - 700 metres above sea level with an average slope of 15% - 20% and are more than 50 years old.

It is a traditional goblet-trained vineyard grown organically on clay, calcareous and bluish slate soils. The grapes are harvested manually.

Regarding vinification, 20% of the grapes ferment with whole bunches and the treading is done manually.

Winery

In 2008 Fernando Mora started making wine at home. Thus began one of the most interesting and original wine projects in Spain.

The winery is a house with a 200 year old underground cave (3 levels) that enables them to work by gravity and delicately handle the grapes, as well as benefiting from perfect temperature and humidity conditions for ageing.

After a major remodelling, it now lets them process around 70,000 kilos of grapes and age almost 50,000 litres of wine in various containers: concrete, oak foudres and barrels of different sizes up to 600 litres (demi-muid).

Although wines have been aged in this winery since 2017, 2019 is the first vintage that has been made entirely in the new winery and in which they have been able to vinify all the plots separately. There are 45 wines in total with which they will make different blends.
