Vineyard and elaboration
The vineyard is located in Finca Ygay, in Rioja Alta, with a total area of 300 hectares around the winery and an altitude range between 320 and 485 metres above sea level.
Bunches are destemmed and gently crushed. Varieties ferment separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Vatting lasts for 8 days, during which grape juice is pumped over and stirred to enhance contact between juice and skins, and encourage a slow, natural extraction of aromas and polyphenols.
After fermentation, the solid parts of the grapes are pressed in vertical presses, in a gentle and slow process that favours the extraction of the colour and ripe tannins in the skins.
The winery
The origin of the Marqués de Murrieta winery is also the origin of Rioja wine. Don Luciano Murrieta, applying the techniques learned in Bordeaux, made the first Rioja wine in 1852, intended to last.
It was clear to Don Luciano from the beginning that wine with Rioja quality and good ageing would end up being exported outside Spain. That is why he did not hesitate to send that mythical vintage of 1852 to countries such as Mexico and Cuba, making it the first Rioja wine to be exported.
The Castillo de Ygay is home to the oldest industrial building in Europe, a benchmark of modernity and balance.
Thanks to its historical importance in wine world, its heritage and architecture, Castillo de Ygay and therefore Marqués de Murrieta headquarters were declared a museum in 2019.
Since 1983, the Cebrián-Sagarriga Family has been the head of Marqués de Murrieta Estates & Wines.
It is worth mentioning that a new winery was built next to Ygay Castle in 2021. A renovation project of Marqués de Murrieta, equipped with the latest winemaking technology, making it one of the most avant-garde buildings in the world.
